When I have killed all pppd, after running poff, when we pick up to
answer a phone call, we are getting a modem screech, which we have to
physically remove the line to get rid of.

I use modem lights to dial in, or alternately pon. Previously, I had
configured ppp to "persist" when disconnected; however, even when those
lines were commented out from /etc/ppp/options, this other behavior has
    bothered us.

Can someone suggest where we might look?
