    exact same problems in gcc 3.0 when it was released. So people who
    didn't make the changes for 2.96 had to make the same ones for 3.0.

    (There was also the fact that the C++ ABI was incompatible, but
    again, that's no different from the g++ 3.x releases....)

      ... I suspect that they would not have, and if I'm right the result of merging ... identify and understand bugs that delay the releases, ... if merging fewer catagoies of stuff doesn't speed up the release cycle ... if it doesn't they only delay things by a couple of months one ...
