    It could be some [weird] cron job or something. Try this to obtain top's
    snapshots to a file in background while playing:

    $ top -b -d 10 > top.txt &
    $ nifty-game

    After some 40 secs os sluggishness, exit the game, kill top ("pkill
    top") and check top.txt. Look for a high cpu usage process, on the last
    2 or 3 listings.
