    The solution was fairly simple. I gave up.

    Several responders gave suggestions that are beyond my current
    understanding. I'm going to wait until I have more in depth
    understanding of Debian and Linux in general or there is a tried and
    tested package.

    For now I'm just going to use "vesa"
