Struggling with Palm Pilot

I have a palm pilot m505 with usb cradle. All the intructions I have read
assume that (assuming devfs is being used) that /dev/usb/tts/* exists.
The directory certainly does, but it is empty.
Not sure where to go next - can someone help me please.
