    Tendril, welcome it looks like you were thrown to the wolves on this
    one, how did you get Debian on your Laptop? Did you buy it
    preinstalled, or did you install it yourself? Did any one give you a
    lesson on using Linux in general?

    Most people here are avid readers and you will find that most people
    will respond by suggesting that you read the fine manual, or reading
    the Howto's about a specific subject. I would suggest one of the fine
    books by O'Reilly such as Linux in a Nutshell, which should be at a
    local book store.

    This should give a good understanding of why Linux is the way it is, and
    some good pointers compared to the Windows world. If you want
    immediate gratification, you can go to http://www.debian.org/doc and
    choose one of the documents listed, I would start off with the install
    manual, to get an idea of what was installed on your machine. Also the
    Debian reference manual is a another must read, The Linux Cookbook is a
    great source for general information.

    We really need to know what exactly is installed on your machine, it
    might be that something is not configured, or installed right. The
    more specific you are the better, that way we can get your problem
    solved.

    For your information xmms; is Versatile X audio player that looks like
    Winamp X Multimedia System is a player for various audio formats,
     with a customizable interface based on X/GTK+.

      * Audio MPEG layer 1, 2, and 3 (with mpg123 plug-in),
      * Ogg Vorbis files (with the Ogg Vorbis plug-in),
      * CD Audio (with CDAudio plug-in), with CDDB support,

      * MOD, XM, S3M, and other module formats (with MikMod plug-in),
