I think that was the key, although the process was a bit more complex.

I found I had a problem with dpkg with the
/var/lib/dpkg/status file failing and 'status-old' not working.
    I fixed it using /var/backups/dpkg.status*

    In the subsequent (2-3 weeks overdue) 'apt-get dist-upgrade --fix-missing'
I noted that all OOo1.1 files were replaced by those of OOo1.1-6

I changed 'Tools->options->openoffice.org->views' to X Window and then
    to Standard.

Opening an existing document caused it to crash as before, but I moved a
document from my Windows XP partition to /home/adam and opened it in
OOo1.1 - it worked, except for the *Bold* and /Italic/ options.
I closed OOo1.1 and opened the same document in AbiWord 2.0.3 where
    *Bold* and /Italic/ worked.
Reopening it again on OOo1.1-6 I found they then worked there as well.

At the time of writing OOo1.1-6 is working with no known bugs.

    Cheers,
