    before compiling the new kernel?

    Are you running iptables?

Can your local machines ping your gateway computer?
What are the permissions of your /etc/resolv.conf ?

Have /etc/network/interfaces changes in any way?

Do you have a valid /etc/hosts?

    What does
    $> route -n
    on your gateway machine show?
