My guess is that some process is still using the device when you try to
unmount it. You could try issuing the command:
fuser -m /cdrom
That will report the process numbers which are using the cdrom. You
can cross reference the list report with the output of 'ps fax' in
order to work out what you should exit/kill/respect/etc.
I believe this command should be installed, though you may need to be
root to use it. (If not installed type 'apt-get install psmisc'.)
