I believe all the startup scripts are in /etc/init.d

Instead of removing them try just removing the execute attribute from the
    file.

    chmod -x <filename>

    See how that goes.

    Subject: startup options

what file controls what programs are started up at boot time. I installed
some stuff, but now don't want them starting up every time it boots. I would
like to remove them for the time being but be able to add them again later
    if I want them.
