    Incoming from Christopher J. Noyes:
    > what file controls what programs are started up at boot time. I
installed some stuff, but now don't want them starting up every time
it boots. I would like to remove them for the time being but be able
to add them again later if I want them.

Hit a carriage return every once in a while, 'kay?

Describe these "programs". Are they servers/daemons that start when
the box boots, or are they apps that start when you login?

     - daemons: ftpd, sshd, NFS/NIS, Samba, ...

     - apps: Mozilla, xplanetbg, emacs, xterm/kterm/rxvt/gnome-terminal, ...
