    hi. if you installed just the base system, then you will need the
    x-window-system package - apt-get it.

    rajesh@trantor:~$ dpkg -l | grep "x-window"
    ii x-window-syste 4.3.0-5 X Window System core components

    thats what you'll need to startx.
