Login as root, and try:
"ls /usr/X11R6/bin"
If you get a list of files, X is installed. Is "startx" in that list? If you
get nothing, or an error saying the directory doesn't exist, you need to
install X, which you do with:
"apt-get install xserver-xfree86"
