    I think what you're really asking is how to get WinXP to be a "standard"
    (rather than a "Microsoft standard") router/dhcp server/etc, which is
    really a Windows question rather than a Debian question. I for one don't
    know how WinXP is setup; for all I know all it's doing is offering smb
    (peer-to-peer "Windows Networking") connections, in which case Samba on
    the Debian side _might_ help.

    However, you can build a real (albeit small) LAN just by running down to
    your local Joe's Discount Computer Shack and getting a $40 (add $15 for
    wireless) router/switch/firewall and a couple of $5 ethernet cables;
    then you plug the DSL connection into the router, configure it to serve
    out IP addresses (either dynamic or reserved) and plug your two
    computers into it; BING! Both machines are on the net, and the Debian
    box no longer has to rely on the Windows box.
