The problem was solved by just rebooting the machine. From the
following syslog entries I assume that the LVM data structures within
the kernel got out of sync:
ReiserFS: dm-3: found reiserfs format "3.6" with standard journal
attempt to access beyond end of device
dm-3: rw=0, want=83886088, limit=83886080
attempt to access beyond end of device
dm-3: rw=0, want=84148232, limit=83886080
...
ReiserFS: dm-3: warning: sh-2029: reiserfs read_bitmaps: bitmap block (#10485760) reading failed
ReiserFS: dm-3: warning: jmacd-8: reiserfs_fill_super: unable to read bitmap
After reboot reiserfsck reports no problems any more and mounting the
volume is possible again.
