Hello, maybe someone has the answer to this.

I'm trying to convert several pdf files to ps. They use japanese fonts, so I
    installed gs-cjk-resources, cmap-adobe-japan1, ttf-xtt-watanabe-mincho. gv
can read the pdf files without problem, and pdf2ps can convert them to ps
correctly, except for one file, where a font which looks like Courier in the
original pdf file (which I can see with acroread in my Debian machine) is
    substituted by boxes.

    Installing cmap-adobe-japan2, and ttf-xtt-wadalab-gothic, doesn't solve the
    problem.

Using pdffonts I get this type of information for the "good" files:

name type emb sub uni object ID
    ------------------------------------ ------------ --- --- --- ---------
MS-Gothic CID TrueType no no no 32 0
    Arial,Italic TrueType no no no 30 0
TimesNewRoman TrueType no no no 36 0
IAKBJJ+Wingdings-Regular CID TrueType yes yes no 16 0

name type emb sub uni object ID
    ------------------------------------ ------------ --- --- --- ---------
MS-Gothic CID TrueType no no no 134 0
    Arial,Italic TrueType no no no 136 0
MS-PGothic CID TrueType no no no 138 0
HFMEEH+Wingdings-Regular CID TrueType yes yes no 139 0
TimesNewRoman TrueType no no no 96 0
HGMaruGothicMPRO CID TrueType no no no 97 0
    Arial,Bold TrueType no no no 98 0
MS-Mincho CID TrueType no no no 99 0
Arial TrueType no no no 100 0
MS-Gothic CID TrueType no no no 101 0
MS-PMincho CID TrueType no no no 102 0
MS-Gothic CID TrueType no no no 103 0
CourierNewPSMT TrueType no no no 104 0

name type emb sub uni object ID
    ------------------------------------ ------------ --- --- --- ---------
MS-Gothic CID TrueType no no no 2588 0
    Arial,Italic TrueType no no no 2589 0
TimesNewRoman TrueType no no no 2584 0
    CourierNewPS-BoldMT TrueType no no no 2564 0
GNOGPL+Wingdings-Regular CID TrueType yes yes no 2565 0
    CourierNewPS-BoldItalicMT TrueType no no no 2566 0

But the problematic file gives something very different:

name type emb sub uni object ID
    ------------------------------------ ------------ --- --- --- ---------
    VRYKAP+TTE155E2C0t00 TrueType yes yes no 364 0
XRKMDF+TT874F74EEtCID-WinCharSetFFFF-H CID TrueType yes yes yes 366 0
    UARTMS+TTE182AC80t00 TrueType yes yes no 381 0
    LOYLPP+TTE18AC3A8t00 TrueType yes yes no 372 0
HDUHWH+TT6C246407tCID-WinCharSetFFFF-H CID TrueType yes yes yes 305 0
HDUHWH+TT6C246407tCID-WinCharSetFFFF-VTT6C246407t CID TrueType yes yes yes
    309 0
    HUECVP+TTE14AAC40t00 TrueType yes yes no 308 0
    DXCOJF+TTE18F5F90t00 TrueType yes yes no 313 0

The only other special thing about this file seems to be that when I use
xpdf instead of gv to view the pdf file, I get
"Error: Illegal bfrange block in ToUnicode CMap". But I'm not sure this has
any relation to the problem, because this occurs even if I don't see the
page where the problematic fonts are. Ironically, xpdf is able to see this
particular file better than the other files, which have overlapped fonts and
all that (gv sees all files correctly).

And in case someone wonders, I need to do this because the pdf files are
encrypted and cannot be printed. Currently I only know to bypass this
using gv + gs-pdfencrypt, or xpdf, neither of which can see the problematic
    fonts anyway.

    Thanks for any help,

                                                      Victor
