    Hello,

    I encountered a gcc problem after upgrading various other packages. Previously ./configure worked fine but now I get this message:

    ./configure --with-grass50=/home/misc/software/grass/grass53_exp_2004_08_07
    checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
    checking for gcc... gcc
    checking whether the C compiler (gcc  ) works... no
    configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
    create executables.

    config.log tells me:

    This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
    running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

    configure:698: checking host system type
    configure:721: checking for gcc
    configure:825: checking whether the C compiler (gcc  ) works
    configure:841: gcc -o conftest    conftest.c  1>&5
    /usr/bin/ld: unrecognized option '--as-needed'
    /usr/bin/ld: use the --help option for usage information
    collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
    configure: failed program was:

    #line 836 "configure"
    #include "confdefs.h"

    main(){return(0);}
