    I've found wdm to be pretty useful for diagnosing these kinds of problems
    (and in fact run it as my only display manager on most of my machines for
    precisely that reason; troubleshooting xdm is murder).

    If you select the safe mode from wdm, does it start?

    My suspicions lean towards a bad xsession script, but you say startx
    works, so that's weird.

    What's your default window manager?

    Anything in /var/log/auth.log, loginlog, syslog or user.log that looks
    useful and/or informative?
