Thanks to all who helped me get my destop box playing midi and
converting it to wav. Now I have a new problem.

Well, its pretty much the same problem, just on the laptop.

I have installed snd, sox, and timidity on the laptop, which is an IBM
    ThinkPad 390, running Woody.

When I try to play a wav with 'play sndfile' I get an error saying
    something to the effect of:

Can not open /dev/dsp no such device.

Well, /dev/dsp does exist with rw permissions for root, as owner, and
audio, as group. I am in the audio group.

I am guessing that this is a question of not having the correct modules
loaded, especially since I see nothing in /etc/modules that looks like
it would pertain to sound. Does anyone know what modules I would need
on this machine. Or can someone tell me how to determine which modules
    I need.
