Hey man, I think you are being too pessimistic...I did installed woody on
my laptop: it was my first Linux and I do not have 20 years' software
development experience. I believe you might have just got an hardware which is
incompatible (i.e. USB mouse) with Linux; in addition consider you are a
Linux beginner: you cannot expect to understand the whole Debian universe in a
nutshell (i.e. your error with the dhcp version number associated to the
kernel). You should keep a low profile and do more things on your
own: think that what a person suggests is not necessarily the best for
you. And now here is my suggestion...
Test with Knoppix your hardware compatibility
    IF
Knoppix makes your system work THEN you know your HW is ok at least
with the latest software (Debian Sid) since Knoppix uses bleeding-edge
stuff. Try to install woody IF woody works stick to it until Sarge
    releases.
    ELSE IF
try to install Sarge IF works stick to it and change to "stable" in
    /etc/apt/sources.list when Sarge releases.
    ELSE
    install Sid
    ENDIF
Failing of Knoppix means at least that your hW drivers are not in
Debian and at worst that they are not in Linux at all.

    Saluti, Mauro.
