    apt-cache search xfig

    Try 'xfig', it has been around (and tested) for a long time.
    It should do what you want it to, and if not, the file format '.fig'
    is pretty easy to understand, so you can even manipulate it by hand
    if there is a need. Also, the '.eps' output seems very clean IMHO.
