    I don't use a graphical display manager.
    x-window-system-core is a pretty good start.
    It installs no fonts, no utils, and no window managers.
    You also need to add xfonts-base or you'll get a startup error.
    I would add fluxbox and/or twm.

    I guess you could also add xdm.
