I did the same way as u told , my steps are as follows

    1)apt-get install kernel-source-2.4.18
    2)cp /boot/config-2.4.18-bf2.4
    /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.18/.config
    3)make menuconfig
Select 'Load config from file' and choose .config
        Enable 'smp', 'highmem4G'
    4)make dep
    5)make-kpkg clean
    6)make-kpkg --revision=debian.2.4 kernel-image
    7)dpkg -i kernel-image-2.4.18_debian.2.4_i386.deb
    8) Reboot

Got kernel panic. Any mistakes I did?
