    aha. a little reportbug is a wonderful thing:
    http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=270142 (filed by a
    friend of mine, no less!)

    the gist of this is that it won't resize any less because it needs the
    space to show all of the bottom buttons ("get info"; "away"; &c.). if
    you tell gaim not to display the buttons at all, or to just display
    them as pictures, then you can resize the window. seems slightly
    weird to me, but at least there's a way around it!
