IMHO you should think about what you want to do for a "learning project",
then try at least six languages. Learn the ones that came up on top-three
after trying your hand on all six :)
If you are aiming for usefulness in helping with DFSG software, those
probably are Makefiles and shell scripts (yup :P the glue is important), C,
perl and python, followed by C++, php, emacsen-lisp, Ruby and a few others.
Not much is done in Algol or Ada these days. But they're still there, and
so are other fairly interesting languages, such as Haskell.
Choice doesn't even begin to describe it :)
