My wrong typo. I meant that this box can not ping or telnet to itself,
but it can "see" the rest of the world. Pinging 127.0.0.1, telneting
localhost, ftping 127.0.0.1 wait indefinitely without error message.

No error messages including "connection refused". No firewall is setup.
This box can access to any site other than itself. Other hosts can
telnet, ftp to this strange box. Entry "127.0.0.1 localhost" was entered
in /etc/hosts.
