As others have said, a 64 bit CPU will run in 32 bit mode.
The Debian AMD64 port is in pretty good shape, but a home user
should note: certain popular closed source apps are 32 bit:
- w32codecs
- RealPlayer 10 (and 8, but who cares?)
- acroread
It's possible to get them running in chroot jails. The debian-amd64
list archives has much more on how to do that. I'd suggest that
you join that list, and study it's archives.
