I've installed Woody I386 on Compaq Avo 6000 with dual processor but
after the installation, I found that it can detect only one cpu!

    -snip-

Although the Compaq dual CPU machines are problematic, I've never had an
issue with the dually NOT getting both processors with an SMP kernel.

You can try the kernel options 'noapic' and 'nolapic' during boot up,
this will sometimes float you past Compaq's broken motherboard stuff.

To try the settings do this:
Assuming you are using the grub boot loader; when grub loads (right at
the beginning), hit 'e' to edit, choose the line that begins with
'kernel' and hit e again. Now type one of the commands above at the end
of the line, press enter to stick it (for this boot only), and finally
    'b' to boot.

If you find one that helps, then edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and
add it to the end of the kernel line. This way it will stick until you
update your kernel and deb recreates a new menu.1st.

Assuming you have the kernel docs installed (and of course you do;-),
    check out
    /usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-2.6.8/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt.gz
for a brief explanation of some of the options.

Things I've found useful on my Compaq dual XEON (SP700), 'nolapic noacpi
    noapm pci=noapic reboot=bios,warm'. YMMV.

    GL.
