You should try avidemux, avusplit or mplayer.
All these soft are available as packages thanks to Christian Marillat.
Add something like this in your sources.list and download the soft:
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main
deb-src ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main
