Which version of VMware?
On VMware 5 Beta you can do "Edit" - "Preferences" to access the
preferences. Under "HotKeys" you can define the necessary combinations
you need.
In my configuration I need to do
CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+Fx
to go to a terminal.
This combination is in use since VMWare 2.x I think.
bis dahin/kind regards
