    i have the same problem with may country mirror, the reason was - this server didn't respond for a time, but after - all was OK!!! the problem is temporaly!

    Or another reason could be - problems with your network!

       That is strange, because
       http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/main/binary-i386/Packages
       is present for me (even though it is a pool of 5 ip's, the
       mirrors.kernel.org one is present
       (http://204.152.189.120/debian/dists/sarge/main/binary-i386/Packages))
       
       What about a different mirror?
       
       http://www.debian.org/mirror/list - try one of the endless secondary
       sites... I'm sure at least *one* would work.
