    First of all I'd like to point you out to [1] and strongly suggest you
    actually read it.

    I wont be so dumb as to fulfill clichés about debian users by just
    telling you to RTFM. Please tell us what program you're trying to
    install, what version of wine you are using also if you built it from
    source or installed the deb and if so, the ones from sourceforge or
    Debian? Are you runnning woody, sarge or sid, what kernel, are you using
    an UTF-8 locale?
    And what exactly do you mean by getting weird characters? Do parts of
    the messages display correctly or does everything look scrambled, is the
    font as such okay, etc. Just give details, please.

    Also if you haven't done so you might want to tell your problem at the
    wine mailing-lists and search their archives [2], I recall having seen
    similar topics there but can't remember any details since I haven't had
    the problem (so far).
