    Hi Marc,

The k8 module won't work in any case on your Athlon XP which is a k7,
    so no use trying that.
On my system the the powernow_k8 is attached to the freq_table module:

    lsmod |grep powernow
    powernow_k8 10632 0
    freq_table 5320 1 powernow_k8
    processor 23808 1 powernow_k8

    Can you load that one?
If not you could still check your bios, to see if you can disable the
powernow feature, or upgrade to a newer kernel.

Try also to check /proc/cpuinfo when you put your system under load
and then look at the bogomips value. It is roughly 2 times the MHz
    value on Athlon systems.
If it adapts to your load then your bios can control it and you do not
    have install extra software.

    Regards, Sønke
