What does chkrootkit -q <cr> have to say, anything? If yes, your network
connection probably has one or more packet sniffers on it or maybe you got
one or more rootkits installed on your machine. Those extra pieces of
code all have their own execution time; get enough of them on a system and
the system can be made to slow down noticeably.
