    Folks - I'm sure others have come across this but I can't see the
    solution in the archives, so all help welcomed.

    On my box (2*Xeon, SATA HD), I've been running 2.4.27-1-686-smp and
    thought it's about time to move to 2.6 so I did a
     sudo apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686-smp
    and rebooted but now get a kernel panic with this kernel, along the
    lines of

       pivot_root: No such file or directory
       /sbin/init: 432: cannot open dev/console: No such file
       Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempt to kill init!

    Any ideas? My grub menu.lst (below) uses initrd and I'm wondering if
    that's part of the problem. I also note that
    $ ls -lt /initrd*
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Jul 18 10:54 /initrd.img ->
    boot/initrd.img-2.6.8-2-686-smp
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 Nov 12 2004 /initrd.img.old ->
    boot/initrd.img-2.4.27-1-686-smp

    which doesn't quite seem to match up the grub/menu.lst:

    # menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
    # grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),
    # grub-md5-crypt, /usr/share/doc/grub
    # and /usr/share/doc/grub-doc/.

    ## default num
    # Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from
    0, and
    # the entry number 0 is the default if the command is not used.
    #
    # You can specify 'saved' instead of a number. In this case, the default
    entry
    # is the entry saved with the command 'savedefault'.
    default 0

    ## timeout sec
    # Set a timeout, in SEC seconds, before automatically booting the
    default entry
    # (normally the first entry defined).
    timeout 5
