kernel upgrade from 2.4 to 2.6.8-2-686

After upgrade at boot time "Linux loading ....."
appears then system reboots. This happens over and
over again.
The 2.4 kernel was already set up to use initrd.
Any idea what happened in the upgrade and how to fix
it?
