    I'm using lavrec for occasional tv recording with my bt878 (PAL):

    lavrec --software-encoding --format=a --input=P --quality=70 \
      -d 1 --geometry=720x576 -s -U -B -t$TIME -Rl -l100 \
      /export/video/video-%03d.avi

    works quite well for me.
