IIRC, the default is to look at:
1) $PAGER
2) /usr/bin/pager -> /etc/alternatives/pager -> ? (but normally /usr/bin/less)

No, they aren't - but I've already replied to myself in this thread
with a solution that will work without meddling with your system's
locales. ;-)
