I tried this procedure, but it did the same thing as I was reporting.
It brought up the Gnome Desktop Manager (gdm?). I typed in my name
and password. the screen went blank like it was trying to log me in,
and then brought me back to the Gnome Desktop Manager login window.

I'm using Debian Linux. I'm not sure what installation it is (Woody,
etc) I've look at some of the log files you mentioned but really
didn't see Error messages. I looked in /tmp and there are several
files in there. There are a couple files(.X0-lock, gcond-paul/lock,
etc.) that indicate that an X11 session couldn't be started.
Any thoughts?
