I figured somebody had tried something like that or come up with a more clever
idea, but I mentioned it, just in case...

So I take it that e-mail was not forwarded to the offending address?

At least that should provide another point of cross reference.

If I had a better idea, I'd throw it out, but I'm sure those working with the
lists have given much more thought to it than I have.
