my issue occured with xserver-xorg 6.9. i downgraded back to 6.8.2 and
ati/radeon drivers work well. i haven't used kernel 2.6.12, but my issue
was with my own kernels compiled starting at 2.6.13.2

i have a strong feeling that if you were to downgrade xserver, you will
be able to regain your x with an older xserver. i have the same ati
chipset as you on my dell inspiron 6000.

I see, to bad, must've been something they changed in the kernel that
the xorg drivers doesnt like, right?

seems that way.

Have you found or filed some bugreport for the xorg developers?

i haven't. i am not too familiar with whom exactly to file it with.
