Are /dev/hdd1 and /dev/hdc1 both partitions of type (hex)fd?

No, they were 83.

I have now chaged it, but still

cookiemonster:~# /etc/init.d/mdadm-raid start
Starting raid devices: mdadm: No arrays found in config file
done.
cookiemonster:~# cat /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
DEVICE partitions
cookiemonster:~#
cookiemonster:~# mdadm --examine --scan
ARRAY /dev/.static/dev/md0 level=raid5 num-devices=2
UUID=be1a9899:cbbb6f22:2b320f91:f4efdba8
devices=/dev/hdd1,/dev/hdc1
cookiemonster:~#
