I have just done an apt-get upgrade on my unstable system and it updated
the 2.6.16-1 kernel package.
I rebooted and the system came back up but didnt find a network connection.
As expected as I had to rebuild the driver for my card.
However rebuilding the driver and inserting it didnt work. Even after
copying it to the right place in /lib/modules/.... and running a depmod.
So I ran an ifconfig and got a blank screen no info at all.
So I tried ifup lo which gives me
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
lo: Error While getting interface flags : No such device
lo: Error While getting interface flags : No such device
Failed to bring up lo
but if i modify my /etc/network/interfaces to say eth0 is inet loopback.
eth0 comes up fine.
However i can not bring up my network card as it complains that the device
doesnt exist despite the module inserting correctly.
Please run lspci and post the part of the output that identifies your
network card. Also tell us which driver you are using and how you
rebuilt it. Finally, as a very basic diagnostic, can you see the device
in /sys/class/net?
