Both the utilities seem to agree upon a screen size
much smaller than it actually is:
in fact, 'xrandr' produces the following output:

'man xorg.conf' is probably the first place to look for any xserver
configuration problems like this.

Also check the man page for whichever driver is listed in the
'Device' section of xorg.conf.
