Hello Andrew,

Since your reply I've read several reports of a problem between
3c509 and SB16. Appears that PnP fails to assign them distinct IRQs.

as> anything in dmesg or other logs about it?

The dmesg for kernel 2.4.27 contains this.
isapnp: Scanning for PnP cards...
isapnp: SB audio device quirk - increasing port range
isapnp: Card 'Creative ViBRA16X PnP'
isapnp: Card '3Com 3C509B EtherLink III'
isapnp: 2 Plug & Play cards detected total
eth0: 3c5x9 at 0x220, 10baseT port, address 00 50 da 81 c8 0d, IRQ 5.

These settings for the 3c509 persist regardless of the
configuration set by the 3Com software.

IRQ 7 is also available for the ISA cards and, according to
documentation for the SB CT4170, it can use 7; dmesg does
not mention an assignment. Appears that PnP also fails on
this card.

Appears that there is a bug in the Debian PnP software
or in the driver for the 3c509 or the SB. Trying to resolve
this by monkeying with configurations might only waste
time.

dmesg also has this.
usb-uhci.c: v1.275:USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver
hub.c: new USB device 00:04.2-1, assigned address 2
input: USB HID v1.00 Device [C-Media USB Headphone Set ] on usb1:2.3

So the headset is recognized. Still, the usb/audio module
refuses to install. Any ideas to operate the USB headset?
Is something else needed before the usb/audio module
will install?

Thanks for any help, ... Peter
