"tex" mode is for aspell to *ignore* tex commands...

I think so, too.

A workaround for this problem is to put

\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}

in the preamble of your document. It will enable latex to decode
accented characters in your .tex file. This is much nicer for both the
spellchecker and the human typist/proofreader.
