I was having that problem too, what I did was upgrade the kdebase package to
sid's version since it has the 3.5.5a-2 version of the libraries. The
problem seems to be because etch is still using 3.4.2.
Worked for me so far.

If I use a terminal the su command works fine, so I'm sure that the root
password is correct.
