What is the output of the following commands after you changed to radeon?
$ lsmod | grep radeon $ lsof /dev/dri/card0

(fully) supports only up to 9250.
The Gentoo is outdated then:

My Radeon 9600 has an RV350 chip.
root@main:~# lsof /dev/dri/card0
Hm, not good. The Xorg process should be using this. What’s the Xorg.0.log
contents using the radeon driver?
