I hear that. Sarge always used a default of 1024x768 on my box and that works
well for me. The few times I need something different I'd change it manually.
Since etch changed to xorg instead of xfree86 x-windows always seem to
default to the highest resolution in my xorg.conf. I changed my xorg.conf so
the highest resolution I have in there is 1024x768 so everything works as
always but now I can't change to a higher resalution without changing my
config.

I didn't have such problem when I was using Fedora and it just choose the
driver automatically. Maybe it happens because I am using xfree86. Is it
possible to simply use "xorg" instead? Fedora used it too, so I think it
is more suitable for me.

It may be possible on sarge if you add backports.org to
your /etc/apt/sources.list, but I'm not sure. It may not be simple to do.

If you feel adventurous you could upgrade to etch (testing), it is frozen now
and will be released as the next stable release soon. I run etch here and it
is as good as stable from what I can see. Etch uses xorg.

The nv driver should work with your nvidia card for 2D graphics. If you
want to do any gaming or anything that requires 3D graphics you'll need
to install the nvidia kernel module. Those modules are available in etch
and sid in the non-free and contrib repo's, look for nvidia*

If your running sarge you need to build those modules yourself, it's easy
to do if you have module-assistant installed. First run "m-a prepare" and
m-a will prepare your box to build those modules and then "m-a a-i
nvidia" to build those modules, create an nvidia*.deb and install it.
Once that is done run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 (or xorg) and
choose the nvidia driver.
