Run it in single user mode, without *anything* that could touch the disk
running. Use a live-cd/live-dvd distro if you have to. When your HD's
firmware is of the crappy "will-abort" kind instead of the much nicer
"will-resume-later" kind, you have no other choice than to find a way to
have nothing send it any commands while it is doing the tests.
